change locksLocks Grades

Locks are available in different grades which are determined by their construction and durability and are tested by the BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association). The BHMA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for builders hardware.

Two tests are performed to categorize the grade of the locks:

  1. Strength test that examines how much forcible turning a lock in the locked position can withstand

  2. The cycle test examines how many times the lock can be operated before it fails

Grade 1 Locks –

  • Knob: must hold up to 300 lb-in
  • Lever – must withstand 450 lb-in
  • Cycles – must complete 800,000 cycles

Recommended for commercial applications in order to meet commercial building requirements and to provide the best security against vandalism and heavy usage.

Grade 2 Locks –

  • Knob: must hold up to 150 lb-in
  • Lever: must hold up to 225 lb-in
  • Cycles – must complete 400,000 cycles

Recommended for commercial applications with light commercial requirements. Some grade 2 locks offer many grade 1 features and provide excellent security and durability for residential applications.

Grade 3 Locks –

  • Knob: must hold at least 120 lb-in
  • Lever: must hold at least 180 lb-in
  • Cycles – must complete 200,000 cycles

Grade 3 locks meet residential building requirements and provide standard residential security. With that being said, New England Locks, Inc. recommends Grade 2 locks to be used for residential applications.

High Security Locks

The security of any mechanical locking system depends on 2 main factors:

  1. Physical strength against picking, drilling and other forms of attack. High security locks are manufactured of solid specific materials that offering a high quality and dependable resistance against any form of physical attack. Some might have other features like: steel shroud over bolt which protects against lock "ice pick" attack and manipulation and/or solid, hardened steel bolt in heavy gauge steel tubular housing that provides defense again physical attack.

  2. Controlling duplication of keys. Unauthorized key duplication by employees, tenants or maintenance personnel with temporary access to an original restricted area for their own personal use, could result in a major breach of security, effective key control is essential to the success of any high security lock system.

High Security Locks such as Medeco and Multi Lock provide you with the physical strength and duplication control that you need in order to increase your security and safety. Click Here to review some available finishes

My husband got 3 estimates for Medeco locks and we had to choose between 2 companies since one of the estimates was much higher, we decided to go with New England Locks since we really liked their customer service and the fact that they were able to work around our schedule. We are happy with the results and I can definitely say that we had a good experience."
