  • Burglars routinely check under flowerpots and welcome mats and on window ledges. So do not leave Spare keys outside your home in a "secret" place, they know all the hiding places!
  • Do not let newspapers or mail pile up while you are away.
  • Trim trees and shrubs near your doors and windows, if you are thinking of installing a fence are sure not to choose a very high one. High Fences and shrubbery can add to your privacy, but privacy is a burglar's asset.
  • Mount exterior lights that are out of reach, it can reduce the darkness a burglar finds reassuring.
  • Discourage Burglars by installing deadbolts and sturdy door and windows that would take time to get past, after all time is a burglar's worse enemy.
  • Install an alarm system. Many types of alarm systems are available, with detectors to be mounted on doors and windows. Call New England Locks to have a technician survey your home and advise you about suitable protection.
  • Outside doors should be metal or solid hardwood, and at least 1 3/4 inches thick. Frames must be made of equally strong material, and each door must fit its frame securely.
  • Sliding glass doors present a special problem because they are easy to open, but there are locks designed for them. Most people put a broomstick in the door channel to help, but don't depend on it for security.
  • Deadbolt locks are best, double check the entry doors.
  • Key locks are available for all types of windows so be sure to secure vulnerable windows.
  • For windows at street level, consider iron grates or grilles. For windows opening onto a fire escape, metal accordion gates can be installed on the inside.
  • Establish a routine to follow in making certain that doors and windows are locked and alarm systems are turned on.
  • Handle your keys carefully. Don't carry house keys on a key ring bearing your home address or leave house keys with your car in a commercial parking lot.
